The counselor is available throughout the school hours. Specialized guidance is given to children of all ages. The counselor conducts Personality Development sessions in the school and helps the children express themselves in a better way. Helping children set their goals like selecting the right career etc. proves to be beneficial for the students. 

Unwanted behavioral pattern are closely monitored and addressed by the counselor. A healthy interaction is maintained between the school and the parent body to help children in problem solving, self analyses and right action.                        

ROLE OF A COUNSELLOR

A Counselor is an individual whom people approach to discuss certain issues which are persistently bothering them in life. The people seek advise, suggestions and guidance from the Counselor. The Councilor has to be fair and non-judgmental while providing suggestions and solutions to these issues. He/she has to ensure complete confidentiality during the process.

     
• The issues dealt with by the Counsellor can be different in nature and magnitude. For school going children the issues are separate and for adults they would be completely different. A Counsellor has to tackle the following issues while dealing with school children :-
  
• ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) – These children are very easily distracted, restless and have a very short attention span.
  
• Academic low achievers – These are children who are unable to cope up with academic pressure and not able to reciprocate in the examinations.
  
• Children with behavior disorders (rigidity, extreme anger)
  
• Dyslexics – Children who have reading disability.
  
• Slow learners.
  
• Children with special needs (either some mental or physical disability).
  
• Children from broken homes (Children who are suffering due to parental discord and conflicts).
  
• Children with introvert personality – These are children who do not interact with others but prefer to remain aloof.
  
  

While dealing with teachers working in a school, the Counselor will have to tackle the following issues :-

  
• School and classroom related – How to handle the class in an efficient and disciplined manner.
  
• Interpersonal relationships with colleagues – Any sort of conflicts.
• Certain health related queries – Questions related to certain pertinent diseases etc.
• Certain personal problems relating to family conflicts.
• Stress management and coping strategies.
• Issues like smoking, alcoholism, violence amongst children due to media influence, extreme aggression, temper tantrums etc.
• They may also seek answers to effective multi-tasking as it is the need for the day.

If we try and analyse the broad categories which the counselor has to tackle, then the list would include – inter and intra-personal relationships, social issues, health and personality dynamics, efficient time management skills, stress and coping mechanisms. If we go into the depth of each of these then the list would be endless and the responsibility of the Counselor multifold.
